The first thing is to figure out is were to go? There are so many options, Bahamas, Mexico, Belize, Los Roques, The Keys, Cuba... It will depend on both your budget and preferred way to fish. Some places offer miles of wadable flats, while others solely offer fishing from a boat. I would suggest contacting a reliable travel agency specialized in Fly Fishing trips or whenever possible, ask someone from your local flyshop. Maybe they have fished some places and can offer you some good advise on both locations and the right tackle to take with you.

Flats fishing is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world. But you have to...

Abel reels has introduced a new or better said an updated version of their popular Super series reels. The new super model now has a handy quick change spool that we like a lot. Yet it is a little lighter then the 'old' super series reels! Abel also changed their clicker set-up, they are now both on the top side of the reel. This means they are able to port the bottom of the reel. Because the 'old' model had a clicker at that position, they could not do this on the previous model. The Arbour has also increased, so more line pick-up with every turn you make... great job Abel!

Because of the quick change spool the reels have lost the...

Bought the Galvan Torque 8 reel some time ago and fished with it the last two weeks on the Bahamas. I fished mainly on Bonefish, what a great fly reel! The drag has a wide range of adjustments and the handle is nice and big. It preforms like a top quality reel should. My compliments to the Qflyshop Team their service is top notch!

Thank you for your kind words and beautiful photo Diederik!

Paradise Found

not a monster but strong and beautiful

There is just something magical about flats fishing. Nothing beats being in one of the most special places on this planet trying to get these fish to eat your fly. But why is this place a true fly anglers paradise? A big chuck of why it’s so special, Has everything to do with the most diverse and spectacular saltwater fly fishing possibly anywhere on the planet.

nice bonefish

The lakes and its location in the middle of the two bays is the reason that Dial Duncan build paradise lodge at this spot 20 years ago!

This is my go to pattern for big Bonefish. When Bonefish get over 6-8 pound they get smart, spooky and often feed more selective. They don't act the same as a 3-4 pound fish... so you need another fly to target those bigger Bonefish.

Tackle and equipment

Now that we know about the bonefish and his world let’s talk about the gear we need for catching bonefish. But before we start let me say this, everything you’ll read is my own opinion. And yes some other people may have different opinions. For me I want the best gear out there, because when I spend time out on the flats I don’t want to worry about anything. I just want to have a good time! So the last thing I need is the drag of my reel to breakdown or loosing a big fish because my leader breaks or my hook isn’t sharp anymore. That being said, you can and will catch bonefish with a really cheap outfit. It will...

Finding and spotting bonefish

More often than not this is the most difficult aspect of the Bonefishing game. Especially when the sun is low on the horizon or obscured by clouds. The first time I went flats fishing for bonefish I could not believe there was a single fish on the flat. For more than an hour I just could not spot even a single fish. Until suddenly I spotted a tailing bonefish, it flashed its tail like a mirror and I still remember that day like it was yesterday. My hart raced… finally a bonefish! I could not believe my eyes, but it was there right in front of me! I waded very carefully towards the tailing fish and suddenly...

The bonefish and its world

Bonefishing takes us to some of the worlds most beautiful and magical places. No wonder many people dream about sight fishing for bonefish and share memorable moments with friends, Good fishing and lots of smiles that’s what bonefishing is all about!

There are different species of bonefish all belonging to the Albulidae family. In the past we thought there was only one species of bonefish. But since then nine different species have been identified. There are 6 species in the Pacific and 3 species in the Caribbean, they look so much alike that most of the recognition has to be done by genetic analysis. The...

Intro

Since I started with fly fishing I have dreamed about fishing for bonefish. The pictures in the books showed a tropical paradise where fishermen were wading in shallow warm water colored like emeralds, chasing after those perfect silver fish shaped like a bullet. These fish would rip the backing off your reel faster than any other fish and you could see it happen all right in front of you. Off course I was hooked from that moment myself. Someday it was going to be me standing in paradise casting to those amazing bonefish. Since then I have been fortunate to fish the flats on a regular basis in different places around the world....
